COVID-19 Adjustments- Grants to support families

July 12, 2020 by Tricia Hernes

During this pandemic, much has changed for everyone.

Our programs had to stop, and we had to re-think how we could support our member families during this time.   Two grant opportunities presented themselves, and we had two ways to support families.

One of our grant programs was funded by the First West Foundations Community Response Fund.  We received funds to do a Pantry Stock Up program with our families.   Any DFP member family was able to apply to have a pantry box of items that could have included Tuna, Beans, Soup, Oil, Flour, Crackers, Pasta, Tomato Sauce, Peanut Butter, Rice, Quinoa, Jam, Oats and more!  Then, they were given a gift card to a grocery store of their preference to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and more.  Save on Foods was a great help getting the truck full of food ordered and loaded!!

The Family Care Package is supported by the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund and Community Foundations of Canada.  We received a grant to do a Family Care Package for our families.   Any DFP member family was able to apply to have a care package that could include hand sanitizer, a refill, a purse pump one, cloth masks, disposable gloves, and an activity package for their kiddos!  This meant families were able to start venturing out into public without the extra cost or purchasing or burden of sourcing these products to protect their health.  Thanks to Maple Leaf Spirits for partnering for the hand Sanitizer, Ron Legary for donating our small pump sanitizer, and Sarah Johnson for making all our cloth masks.

We had a Practicum Student Tina Gamache working with us to help create and deliver all the packages, so big thanks to her for all her hard work.

Please enjoy these photos of the grant programs!

Family Get Together at Apex

February 27, 2020 by Tricia Hernes

Winter wonderland is a great way to describe Apex!  Our families had the chance to go up and enjoy a day of tubing at the Apex tube park on Sun, Feb 23rd.   It was a great day with 53 participating in our activity.  It was snowing, and the sun came out during the bulk of our time.

Some families brought up hot dogs to roast, others packed a lunch, and we all enjoyed the hot chocolate provided to us by Tim Hortons Penticton (BIG thank you!).  Lots of fun was had by all.  Some families had never ventured up to the hill, and some had never tried tubing.   Lots of smiling faces told me they had a great time and loved having the opportunity to go!

We were able to make this happen because of our grant from the Community Foundation SOS that supports our Monthly FGT.  Thank you!

Christmas Party 2019

February 27, 2020 by Tricia Hernes

On December 15th we had our Annual Christmas Party, which is part of our Monthly Family Get Togethers, a program we run thanks to the support of the Community Foundation SOS and Safeway.   It took place in the afternoon at the Shatford Centre, and was a fun afternoon of crafts, cookie decorating, snacks and socializing.   The highlight was a great visit from Santa with a gift for each child in attendance.

A big thank you to IGA Penticton for the cookies and icing, Safeway for the snacks/drinks/cookie decorations, CFSOS for their ongoing support that makes it possible, and the Shatford for the great space that makes it all happen.   Our volunteers were amazing as always, and we were able to give each of our long term volunteers a thank you for their dedication and support!

Please enjoy the photos, and share with friends!
